Baby vitamins

For the most part babies get what they need from breast milk or formula. Some babies however may need to take baby vitamins. The pediatrician will let the parents know when supplementation is necessary, usually these are babies that are premature or iron deficient.

Babies that are strictly breast fed may lack one important vitamin though. This is vitamin D. Babies don’t normally spend time in the sun, which is how the body produces  the vitamin so a pediatrician may recommend vitamin D drops for the baby in addition to the breast milk. Formula is fortified with vitamin D as well as baby cereals.

Babies that are low birth weight or iron deficient may need baby vitamins that contain more than just vitamin D. Since formula and cereals are fortified, the levels of each vitamin are relatively small. Baby vitamins are often in drop form making them easy to administer.
